Dental inlays and onlays are precisely crafted restorations designed to provide a stronger, longer-lasting, and more natural-looking alternative to traditional fillings for teeth with moderate damage.
Dental inlays and onlays, often called custom-made fillings, are restorations designed to repair mild to moderate tooth decay, cracks, or fractures without the need for a full crown. This approach helps preserve more of your natural tooth structure. Made from durable, long-lasting materials, inlays and onlays can often last over 10 years. They are also commonly used to replace worn or failing old fillings.
During your first visit, the dentist will numb the area around the tooth and remove any decayed or damaged material. Once the tooth is cleaned and prepared, an impression is taken and sent to a dental laboratory for the custom inlay or onlay. A temporary restoration is placed to protect the tooth in the meantime.
At your second visit, the temporary restoration is removed, and the custom inlay or onlay is carefully checked for a precise fit. Once confirmed, it is bonded to the tooth using a strong resin adhesive. Finally, the dentist polishes the restoration to provide a smooth, natural, and aesthetically pleasing finish.
