Sinus Lift / Bone Grafting At Battersea Dentist

A sinus lift, also known as sinus augmentation, is a procedure that increases the amount of bone in the upper jaw around the molar and premolar area describes adding bone between the jaw and the maxillary sinuses, which sit on either side of the nose.

How Sinus Lift / Bone Gratfing is done

To create space for the additional bone, the sinus membrane is gently lifted upward, which is why the procedure is called a sinus lift. This surgery is usually performed by an oral or maxillofacial surgeon.

A sinus lift is recommended when there is insufficient bone in the upper jaw or the sinuses are positioned too close to the jaw for dental implants to be safely placed.

There are several reasons why this may be necessary:

  • Many people who have lost upper back teeth, especially molars, do not have enough bone in that area for implants. The anatomy of the upper jaw naturally has less bone compared to the lower jaw.

  • Bone loss may occur due to periodontal (gum) disease. After teeth are lost, the surrounding bone begins to resorb, and over time there may not be enough remaining to support implants.

  • The maxillary sinus may be positioned too close to the upper jaw for implant placement. Sinus size and shape vary between individuals and can increase with age, further reducing available bone.

A sinus lift is a common procedure, especially as more people choose dental implants to replace missing teeth. In many cases, the sinus lift can be performed at the same time as the implant placement. This is followed by a healing period of around nine months, allowing the added bone to integrate naturally before the final restoration, such as a dental crown, is placed onto the implant and abutment.
