If dental anxiety is preventing you from getting the care you need, sedation dentistry can help you stay calm and enjoy a comfortable, stress-free treatment experience.
Sedation is a safe and effective option for patients who feel anxious about dental treatment, have a strong gag reflex, or have experienced dental trauma in the past.
Unlike general anesthesia, you breathe on your own throughout the procedure, making it a very safe option. The sedative helps you relax and has a mild amnesic effect, so you may have little to no memory of the treatment afterward.
Once you are calm and relaxed, your dentist will administer local anesthesia as usual to numb your teeth and ensure a comfortable procedure.
Eat a light meal beforehand; there’s no need to fast.
Stay hydrated by drinking water as usual.
Bring a responsible adult to accompany you and drive you home (sedation cannot be administered without this).
Take your prescribed medications at the usual times.
Avoid fatty foods and alcohol for 48 hours before your appointment.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
Remove nail polish before your visit.
The sedative medication will be administered through a small IV in your arm or hand.
You will feel relaxed and calm, often with little or no awareness of the procedure as it takes place.
You must be accompanied and supervised by a responsible adult for 24 hours after your sedation.
Do not drive.
Avoid operating machinery or household appliances, such as kettles or ovens.
Do not sign any legal documents.
Refrain from consuming alcohol.
